Check a subtitle file

Open an .srt or .vtt file to check its timing, line length and reading speed, and to repair text typed in old Georgian fonts. The file stays on your device: nothing is uploaded.

Or paste the text

What it checks

  • At most 2 lines per subtitle, and 42 characters per line.2,3
  • At least ⅚ of a second and at most 7 seconds on screen.2
  • Reading speed: 17 characters a second in Georgian and other languages, 20 in English.4,3
  • Subtitles that overlap, run backwards in time, or are empty.
  • In Georgian: text from old fonts, Mtavruli capitals, and straight quotation marks.

Downloaded files are numbered in order, saved in UTF-8, and cleaned of empty lines inside subtitles. The rules behind each check are in the style guide.

Old Georgian fonts

Before Unicode, Georgian was often typed with fonts such as AcadNusx, which draw Georgian letters in place of Latin ones. On a computer without that font, the text shows as Latin letters.1 The converter turns each letter back into Georgian using the Georgian keyboard layout: for example, T becomes თ and W becomes ჭ.5 Check a few lines after converting.
